Red cabbage, hake, turkey, beef round or prawns show increases of more than 10% over last year, data from the OCU shows

Christmas is just around the corner and families are starting to shop for lunch and dinner on these dates. Some purchases will be significantly more expensive this year as the foods sold the most on these dates are up 5.2% on average, according to data revealed this Thursday by the OCU.

The consumer organization points out that more than a third of the products that make up the Christmas basket (they’ve been analyzing a list of fifteen popular foods on these dates since 2005) are all-time highs, making this year’s Christmas meals the most expensive in recent times. .

Of the products that have risen in price by more than 10% compared to last year, red cabbage stands out, rising from 1.34 Euro per kilo to 1.77 Euro per kilo, 32%; hake (from €13.04/kg to €15.13/kg, 16% more); turkey (14% more), round beef (13%), pineapple (13%), Galician barnacles (13%) and shrimp (11%).

The only products that will drop in price compared to Christmas 2021 are eel (-23%), oysters (-17%), Iberian ham (-4%) and pularda (-1%). Other typical foods of these dates, such as suckling lamb, are only up 1%, but the OCU explains that it already had a big increase last year, until it sold for 18.63 euros per kilo this season.
