According to a media report, Apple is lowering its targets in the development of self-driving electric cars. The iPhone manufacturer is also postponing the planned market launch of the vehicles to 2026.
The Bloomberg agency reported this on Tuesday based on people familiar with the case. Apple is only planning a less ambitious design that will still have a steering wheel and pedals.
The vehicle must have guided driving functions that work on highways. The vehicle will not always be able to drive completely independently.
Launch originally planned for 2025
Apple originally wanted to develop a self-driving electric car without a steering wheel or pedals. Bloomberg reported last year that Apple plans to bring the first self-driving electric car to market as early as 2025. Apple was initially unable to respond.
Apple shares fell 2.4 percent in late US trading. The tech exchange Nasdaq also fell by the same amount.
