The government is enforcing subway and bus discounts in the communities that provide the aid

Date:

The executive decides to extend the direct support of 30% to public transport, but only in the autonomys that supplement it to 50%

Public transportation will continue to be subsidized in 2023, at least in the communities that complement the aid the government has announced it will continue to provide. So beyond the free trains of Cercanías, Rodalíes and Media Distancia – an exclusive purview of the state – for return travelers in the coming year, the president announced on Tuesday the decision to extend the 30% subsidy to the media of public transport that depend on the autonomous communities, such as buses and the metro.

But this aid will include a clause: only those communities that decide to extend the subsidy to 50% will benefit, which would leave out some, such as the Community of Madrid, which announced weeks ago that its support for public transport would be granted. end on December 31. In those who support this direct support from the Executive, city and intercity subscriptions remain 30% off, which communities can renew up to 50%, as has been the case until now. Now it remains to be seen what they will do after the government has confirmed that it will continue to subsidize the prices of these means of transport with direct aid at 30%.

This decision follows the announcement that the fuel surcharge of 20 cents per liter will be abolished on 1 January, intended as an incentive for citizens to switch from their own car to public transport. The goal, as outlined by President Pedro Sánchez in his speech, is to promote the ecological transition of transportation and help working-class families, those who use these modes of transportation the most.
