Telefónica will pay 1,400 million to transfer La Liga matches, which were awarded by the machine.

Date:

Agreement between Telefónica and Dazn. In December last year, the two companies were awarded television rights to LaLiga, the highest competition in Spanish football, for the next five seasons. Now, three months later, Spanish Telecom has reached an agreement with the British platform to be able to broadcast the matches, which would be in line with its TV offer. For this he will pay 1,400 million euros, amounting to 280 million per season, according to a company statement from the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).

Telefónica has already promoted that it was in talks with Dazn to be able to broadcast the entire Spanish league competition. Both companies already had an agreement to share TV content from competitions such as the English Premier League or Formula 1. The deal was expected to allow Movistar +, the Spanish group’s television station, to offer matches it did not buy at auction. La Liga TV rights were held late last year. This agreement amounted to 4,950 million euros, which must be shared between the two operators.

€ 1,400 million to be paid by Telefónica over the next five seasons will be added to the € 2,700 million auction by Lalig. In total Movistar will make € 4100 million in Spanish football for the next five seasons. € 820 million per season that Telefónica will dedicate to offering its clients this content, allowing it to enter into the highest priced contracts. This figure may differ when the rights of the second division of Spanish football, which were not included in the last auction, are sold at auction.

Despite the high price, Telefónica informed CNMV that the final amount represents a 15% savings per season compared to the previous contract that matched this campaign and the previous two. Under this contract, the entire package of Spanish football was transferred to Movistar. However, in December, two companies were awarded in pursuit of a final tax cut on the value of this product. Of course, Telefónica reserves exclusively three full days.

The agreement between Telefónica and Dazn is not exclusive. In other words, the platform can negotiate with other operators to offer this content. This opens the door for other companies like Orange to continue offering football. To do this, you will have to hold two negotiations. On the one hand, Telefónica, which is considered the dominant operator after the acquisition of Digital +, is obliged to sell its rights in the wholesale market. On the other hand with the machine gun. The French operator, which has been involved in a merger with MásMóvil, has in the past realized the intention of negotiating to continue offering this product.
