A few days after the food summit, however, one of Vienna’s last real grocers smiled only mildly at the result – and especially at the statement that food prices should not be regulated, otherwise you would fuel the “grocers deaths”.

If representatives of the approximately 850 supermarkets in Vienna really wanted to protect the approximately 20 grocers (see diagram of the local supply landscape in Vienna below), it would be quite easy, says Mr Benayyad behind his stand in Meidlinger Tivoligasse: “They get completely different wholesale prices for himself if I have to pay them.
