A treasure is stored in the Lavanttal mountains: lithium, which is needed for battery production. The planned decommissioning was met with fierce opposition from environmentalists, so there has been more talk than action for years. But now the mine operators present a new partner – BMW wants the Carinthian ore.
It has long been known that lithium is stored in the depths of the Koralpe in the Carinthian Lavant Valley. Test drilling was carried out three decades ago, but interest in the ‘white gold’ of battery production only flared up again after the prospecting rights were sold to an Australian mining company. A current feasibility study by European Lithium shows that 12.9 megatonnes of lithium-containing ore are stored in the first possible mining zone – a treasure that cannot be found anywhere else in Europe!
