The American company Amazon wants to raise the starting wage for its logistics staff in Germany to 14 euros “and above”. The German subsidiary announced this on Wednesday in Munich. This should apply from September. The company wants to hold talks with the respective works councils – “as necessary,” the announcement said.
According to the company, more than 20,000 of the 36,000 German Amazon employees work in logistics. So “and upwards” means that Amazon logistics salaries vary slightly from region to region. In some places, the starting wage can then be just over 14 euros. According to a spokesperson, the current starting wage is 13 euros “and above”.
If the planned increase is already included, the company says it has increased starting salaries in logistics by no less than 16 percent since the beginning of last year. Logistics employees without previous training earn an average gross annual salary of 37,000 euros after two years of service.
The American group is responding to the round of sometimes strong salary and collective bargaining increases in the German economy. Amazon rejects collective agreements and has therefore been at odds with the Verdi union for years.
