OMV has received permission from the authorities in Norway to develop and operate the Berling gas field in the North Sea. The first wells are planned for the third quarter of 2026 and production of gas and condensate is expected in 2028, the company announced on Wednesday. Estimated gross recoverable reserves are expected to total approximately 45 million barrels.
OMV, which operates the field, has a 30 percent interest. The Norwegian state energy group Equinor owns 40 percent, the Norwegian oil and gas producer DNO 30 percent. According to previous information, OMV and its partners are investing a total of almost 900 million euros in the development of the gas field.
“One of our most important natural gas projects”
“Berling is one of our most important natural gas development projects and serves to increase the share of natural gas in our portfolio,” said Berislav Gašo, OMV CEO responsible for the Energy business area. The gas and condensate volumes are expected to further strengthen Norway’s position as a major European natural gas supplier.
The Berling gas field is located in northwestern Norway, about 235 kilometers from the port city of Kristiansund. The closest hub is the Equinor-operated Asgard B platform, about 14 miles southeast.
