260 employees are registered with the employment service’s early warning system for dismissal, and 100 temporary workers are no longer needed! The management of Steyr Automotive confirmed this decision on Wednesday evening. There is a lot of shaking in the former MAN factory in Upper Austria – the mayor of the city is also alarmed.
Markus Vogl himself was an employee at MAN for many years; Today, as mayor of the city of Steyr, he follows developments at the location, from which the truck manufacturer separated in the autumn of 2021. A long tug of war followed before a transfer of ownership took place and Siegfried Wolf and his WSA GmbH took over the factory.
The Styrian entrepreneur’s plans were completely turned upside down by the war in Ukraine. The Steyr plant was originally intended for the production of commercial vehicles for the Russian car company GAZ. The sanctions against Russia ultimately ended the planned cooperation before it had even begun.
MAN will be history by the end of this month
Because the work for the former owner MAN, which will demolish its tents in Steyr at the end of this month, is coming to an end and at the same time the ramp-up of production for the electric trucks of the Swedish brand Volta Trucks will not start as planned due to the bankruptcy of the battery manufacturer Steyr Automotive is now cutting back on staff again.
In the AMS early warning system, 260 employees have been registered for dismissal, and 100 temporary workers also have to leave. “A reduction of this magnitude is of course a heavy blow for the region, but especially for the employees who will then be left without a job,” says Mayor Vogl.
“We want to remain an industrial location”
Vogl continues: “We are an industrial location with very stable business operations in which a lot is invested in the future. And we want to remain an industrial location. We do what we can do as a city.”
