Hungary continues to thwart the fight for a joint EU oil embargo against Russia. The country is keen to put conditions on any approval – as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has now explained, Hungary specifically wants money for the expansion of solar energy.
“Hungary would like to invest in solar energy, which is good in principle, but we have yet to talk about the level of the investment,” said von der Leyen on Thursday evening in the ZDF program “maybrit illner”.
War chest will remain well filled
“And then it will become clear whether there is serious interest or whether there is political activity,” added the Commission president. EU member states have been discussing an embargo on Russian oil as the next step in sanctions against Russia for several weeks.
EU states are accused of filling Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin’s war chest by importing Russian oil.
Hungary blocked deal
Hungary opposes the oil embargo, but the measure requires unanimity in the EU. According to von der Leyen, in addition to the desired investments in solar energy, Hungary also mentioned the country’s lack of connection to the oceans – importing liquefied gas by sea as an alternative energy source is therefore not possible for the country.
