Everyone is talking about the need for more sustainable energy. But not enough is happening for rapid expansion.
In view of the sky-high costs of oil, gas and electricity, everyone agrees that Austria needs to become more independent in its energy supply. According to Verbund boss Michael Strugl, a comprehensive mix of measures is urgently needed to achieve this.
In addition to new sources (for example Scandinavia) and forms of energy (for example liquefied gas, hydrogen), the necessary preconditions (expansion of the pipeline network, etc.) must also be created. In addition, a rapid expansion of sustainable energy is absolutely necessary.
Two million photovoltaic systems and 1,200 wind turbines are also needed
For example, to meet the climate targets by 2030 alone, photovoltaic systems would have to be installed new on two million residential roofs and an additional 1,200 wind turbines would be installed. However, the procedures would still take far too long and network expansion would falter due to a lack of line corridors or areas.
“Green gas” from sewage sludge or waste (biomethane) could be expanded relatively quickly. Currently there are about 300 plants. According to Peter Weinelt of Wien Energie, the earlier expansion plans are not ambitious enough. Instead of an extra five TWh, ten TWh would be possible by 2027 once the legislator creates the conditions. Utilities and individuals would invest.
