Our inflation fell slightly last year to 7.8 percent. But that was still more than two percentage points higher than the average of EU countries, meaning every Austrian paid hundreds of euros more than elsewhere. Why this is also because the state is doing too well for us and what economic researchers dream of in the election year…
The trend is correct, because in 2022 inflation here was 8.6 percent, the highest value since the oil crisis of 1974. But in other countries inflation fell even sharper. In our case, however, the gap with cheaper countries has actually increased! In December we were the second most expensive country of the twenty EU countries. For example, Belgium had only 2.3 percent inflation, Spain 3.4 percent.
