Last year, Opel parent company Stellantis announced that it would phase out production in Vienna-Aspern. Now it is a sad certainty: series production will stop in July 2024, with consequences for 220 employees. In the summer there should be 50 to 60. A social plan and support measures are planned for the others.
The staff of the Opel plant in Vienna-Aspern was informed today Thursday about the permanent cessation of series production of mechanical transmissions from July 2024. About a year ago, mother Stellantis (the group includes brands such as Alfa, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge , DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel and Peugeot) announced that they want to phase out production.
About 220 employees are affected
About 220 employees are affected. By the summer, this number is expected to have dropped to 50 to 60. An extensive social plan and numerous support measures (job center, direct contact with more than 120 companies, around fifty internal company presentations, external job advice, etc.) are still offered .
Work is underway to reuse it
At the same time, intensive work is being done on reusing the area. It is said that initial discussions have already begun with potential interested parties in Austria. The site is owned by the state real estate company BIG. They also want to contribute the company’s internal experiences, for example in Slovakia. The aim is to continue the recent establishment of new activities in Aspern. An example is the renovation of the former training workshop in collaboration with the BFI.
