After a refinery accident – Hungary now secures our fuel supply

Date:

Following the accident at the OMV refinery in Schwechat last week that damaged the main distillation plant, the company has now introduced a new system to ensure fuel supply in Austria. In addition to increased production in the group’s other refineries, Hungary is making its reserves available to Austria.

The group’s other refineries in Burghausen (Southern Germany) and Petrobrazi (Romania) are to supply the Schwechat site with input materials and supply larger quantities of fuel to the Austrian market. All crude oil produced in Austria can be further processed without restrictions by using the production capacity of a smaller crude oil distillation plant, the press release said.

In addition, the company is currently investigating whether production capacity in Schwechat can be increased through short-term adjustments.

The duration of the repair still cannot be estimated
In addition, OMV wants to purchase the missing quantities, on which agreement has already been reached with logistics partners. The accident is currently under investigation, but it is not yet possible to estimate how long it will take to repair the system. OMV welcomed the state’s release of the fuel reserves.

Also kerosene bottlenecks
The accident recently led to bottlenecks in the supply of kerosene at Vienna airport. The airport has informed the airlines of this and asked that, if possible, refuel in a different way, depending on the flight route, “to be frugal with reserves,” an OMV spokesperson said on Thursday. However, there are no effects on flight operations.

Hungary releases state reserves
Meanwhile, the Hungarian government has also announced the release of state fuel reserves to secure the country’s supplies. The released quantities of petrol and diesel would be replaced by OMV “as soon as possible”, Hungarian Technology Minister Laszlo Palkovics announced on Saturday, according to the MTI news agency.

The move is intended to secure supplies in the event that the Schwechat refinery shuts down for longer than expected.
