New system from 1.1.25 – pour on it! These myths are being challenged

A new deposit system will be introduced across Austria at the beginning of January 2025 – with major changes for consumers, snack bars, supermarkets and waste collection centers. Krone+ has investigated and debunked seven myths surrounding the new one-way deposit system.

It is an undisputed fact that plastic waste in particular puts enormous pressure on the environment. The seas and their inhabitants are particularly affected. But what do we Austrians have to do with this as residents of a landlocked country? A lot of things: According to the Federal Environment Agency, about 40 million tons of plastic waste ends up in the Black Sea every year via the Danube alone. A significant portion of plastic waste is caused by plastic drinking bottles, but according to figures from waste associations, the collection rate here is only around 70 percent.

According to EU regulations, this must increase to 90 percent for beverage bottles by 2029. To achieve this, a new one-time deposit system will apply from 1 January 2025. A system that has been successfully applied in many other EU countries for years. Krone+ has investigated and shed light on seven myths surrounding the one-time deposit system:
