German researchers may have prevented a major massacre. State security has arrested a 17-year-old for allegedly planning a terrorist attack on a Christmas market.
According to information from the newspaper ‘Bild’, the German-Turkish suspect allegedly targeted the Christmas market in the town of Elmshorn (in the state of Schleswig-Holstein). There he specifically wanted to kill people with a truck.
These clues come from overheard conversations and intercepted communications. The researchers suspect an Islamic background.

US intelligence provided the first clue
The tip about the suspected murderer came from an American secret service in the spring of 2024 and first reached the Federal Criminal Police before being followed up by the authorities in Schleswig-Holstein. In March, the Public Prosecution Service in Flensburg took over the procedure, which ultimately led to the current arrest.
The responsible chief prosecutor confirmed: “We are investigating on suspicion of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state and of conspiracy to commit a crime, namely murder. An arrest warrant has been issued for the 17-year-old suspect.”
Almost 8 years ago: Attack on the Berlin Christmas market
The case brings back memories of December 19, 2016. The Islamist murderer Anis Amri drove a truck into the Berlin Christmas market on Breitscheidplatz. He killed 12 people and injured nearly 170, some seriously. Another victim died in October 2021 from the long-term effects of his injuries.
The attacker, Tunisian Anis Amri, initially escaped undetected, but a public search for him was later launched. Amri’s escape ended three and a half days later in northern Italy, where he was shot dead by an Italian police officer during a shootout.
