CO2 price increased – canceled climate bonus would be a tax increase

Date:

As of January 2025, the CO₂ price will have increased from the current 45 euros to 55 euros per tonne. The climate bonus was intended to compensate for this, but will be abolished according to the will of the coalition negotiators. In other words, if it were canceled without a replacement, there would be a tax increase.

Last November, the Ministry of Climate expected payments of 1.96 billion euros. The amount of the climate bonus depends on the expansion of public transport in the community in question.

Last year, all adults were entitled to a basic amount of 145 euros. The worse the community is connected to public transport, the higher the bonus. Last year the payout levels, including regional equalization, were 145 euros, 195, 245 and 290 euros. Claims were lowest in Vienna, where largely only the basic premium was paid.

In terms of contributions per capita, Burgenland and Carinthia led the way with around 253 and 240 euros. This was followed by Upper Austria (232 euros), Lower Austria and Styria (231 euros each). In Tyrol the average was 229 euros per person, in Salzburg 225. People in Vorarlberg (195 euros) and Vienna (150 euros) had the least money.

As reported, abolishing the climate bonus will save 2.3 billion euros. Climate subsidies must also be abolished.
