He has fought twice at La Condomina, the first in 2018. Both years his bulls gave the bullfighters options for victory
Daniel Ruiz’s cattle was the big winner of the last fair in Murcia. The one of 2019. He received the awards for the best bullfight and the best bull, ‘Duque’, which led to a beautiful work by Morante de la Puebla. He has fought twice at La Condomina, the first in 2018. Both years his bulls gave the bullfighters options for victory. Ureña emerged triumphant during those two years with Daniel Ruiz Yagüe’s Albacete bulls, who formed the cattle ranch with Jandilla cattle in 1986. Ten years earlier, he had started his ranching adventure with cattle from Coquilla, which he sold.
Although according to his son Daniel Ruiz Yagüe he is still in charge of the cattle, the second generation, with son Daniel Ruiz and his sister, shares the management with the father. He has been in Murcia since Sunday. He went to the novillada and kept an eye out for the bulls that have landed on Saturday for the bullfight next Monday, at 6:30 pm, at the Murcia Bullfighting Fair, announcing El Juli, Manzanares and Talavante.
We spoke to him and we started the conversation about the choice of the Jandilla insert: «My father sold the old one, which did not convince him, and bought some cows from his friend Fernando Domecq, who at that time owned Jandilla and with much of the work has come to this day ».
-That work has paid off with bulls like ‘Fanfarria’, pardoned, or ‘Duque’, the last winner in Murcia. Successful livestock in Murcia for two years in a row. What does it mean to you to return to Murcia?
-This is the third bullfight we’re dealing with. Those of 2018 and 2019 were very good bullfights, with some return to the ring, even with a small request for a pardon. We return after these two years of pandemic, and we do it with great affection for the Plaza de Murcia, delighted with the treatment that the Murcia fans and the businessman himself have received. In the corrals there are eight bulls, I think they are very well presented, well made so that they can attack and, God willing and nothing happens, this Monday they will give a great afternoon of bullfighting. In any case, we have provided the means to make it so.
-He returns with a poster with figures. Is it very important for livestock that numbers ask for it?
-Yes. The ranches, when they are in a good moment and the bulls show them off, with courage, with dedication, with a tour and many other things, the bullfighters demand them because they believe that they will succeed with that kind of bull, and who pay an entrance fee, will have fun. We believe in that bull, we believe in that bullfighting, and logically we believe in bullfighting figures.
-They have the farm in the province of Albacete, in Alcaraz. The Albacete fair coincides with Murcia.
-Yes. We fight this Monday here (Murcia) and at night we leave for tomorrow, Tuesday morning, to be able to load the Albacete bullfight, so that it reaches the square and they recognize it because there is fighting on September 15, with a strong poster .
-Perhaps Albacete and Madrid are the places with the greatest responsibility for livestock?
We haven’t traded in Madrid for a long time. It didn’t take much from my father’s sleep that he didn’t trade in Madrid either. Many years ago he marked some kind of bull and we have fought in Seville, Nimes, Murcia, Albacete, Granada, Malaga and many other important arenas. Every year they ask us for bulls for Madrid, and the year we have the right bullfight for Madrid, we go. That’s how we’re good.
– By luck and hard work the whole litter was sold.
-The litter is being sold because of a lot of hard work, because my father has been working hard behind a bull strain for over forty years. We’ve always had a herd that’s filled us up, but that’s always trying to evolve with the bullfighting, with the forms of bullfighting, with the forms of attacks needed, and this year is perhaps one of the most important and resounding seasons since my father bought the farm. But you have to be careful.
-What does a rancher feel when the bullfighters go on the shoulders of their bulls?
-As with any job, when you see your work done and it’s having results, it’s great. In our case, if we see a bull attacking that we’ve already raised a bullfighter who makes art, and that bullfighter can feel that he’s fighting, that’s the best thing there is. These are times when you don’t change for anyone.
– And the pardon?
– The pardon is already in talks with the one above. It’s beautiful because many things come together. I am one hundred percent defender of pardons, regardless of the controversies, because the only people who ask for pardons are those who go through the checkout. In an arena, the fan who first asks for pardon is the fan who goes to the box office and, when we always say that the one who goes to the box office is the one who supports the party with his ticket, when they grant pardon to a bull, it cannot be dismissed in insulting terms such as indultitis, etc. The best selection is made by the public in the square.
-Is that selection of the bullfight on the square more resounding than on the groping square?
-Totally agree. The bull leaves the gate of pigsties after spending two or three days in the corral of a square, to a large ring where they call it banderilleros, picadores… They fight against it. And that that courage is consumed to the end, with class, with devotion, and that whoever has paid x money for a ticket asks for his life is the best selection that can be made of a bull. That’s why I’m for grace, for the people who ask for it. The pardon will always be controversial – to some it will seem like the bull is pardoned, to others not – but we as ranchers will decide whether to throw the bull to the cows or not. But the biggest triumph is that the public will forgive you for a bull.
-The Murcia Bullfight: is there a bull we can bet on?
-You can’t talk before you act. You have to be very careful. You can’t bet on a bull because his belly can hurt and he can’t charge. So we don’t like betting. The one in Murcia is a very even bullfight, chosen with three or four bulls, because the company wanted it so, that rise above the Murcian bull in heads and trapío. They are bulls that come very close to what we are dealing with in Seville and Valencia.
-Lucky rancher for the bulls to attack.
