The LA TRUTH school competition rewards the best work put into practice by the region’s primary and secondary students for the 17 SDGs
End poverty and hunger; guarantee an inclusive, equitable and quality education; achieving gender equality; promoting inclusive and sustained economic growth and taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts are some of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) the planet has committed to achieve by 2030. This global project has been a huge success of awareness since the UN approved it in 2015 through three key actors: government policy, citizen participation and corporate actions. Since then, measures and proposals have been implemented to achieve these global objectives and the indicators show significant progress.
Education centers have thus contributed to the launch of actions aimed at achieving the SDGs while transferring knowledge and values to the school population. For example, LA VERDAD has organized a school competition for sustainable ideas aimed at students between 6 and 16 years old, with the aim of raising awareness about the environment, promoting ecological behavior and raising awareness about sustainability.
The competition consists of two categories, ‘Primary Education’ and ‘Secondary Education’, in which teams of a minimum of four members can enter. Each unit must select one of the 17 SDGs and put it into practice through a project that must develop and translate it into a final report.
The project registration period (including the final report) will remain open until October 24, and the tutor of each team must complete all the fields that appear on the form (participate on the web estoesverde.laverdad.es). The selection of the six finalist groups will take place from October 25 to 28 and the list of winners will be published on November 3. The award ceremony will take place on November 15 in Murcia.
Each category will consist of three winners. The first place in both categories will receive a trophy for each member of the team, a gift voucher (worth 1,000 euros for secondary and 500 euros for primary), writing an article about the winning project that will be published in LA VERDAD, both on paper as digital, and recognition for the tutor. The second classified will also receive a prize for each member, a gift voucher (worth 500 euros for secondary and 300 euros for primary), the publication of the project in the print and online editions of the newspaper and recognition for the teacher-tutor. The third classified also receives an award for each member, a gift voucher (worth 200 euros for secondary and 150 euros for primary education), writing a report about the project that will appear in the newspaper and a recognition for the teacher. .
In addition, there is a special mention for the education center with the most groups and a special prize from the jury worth 350 euros.
The jury, consisting of renowned experts in the field of sustainability and social action, is worth mentioning. The selection of projects is based on the quality of the proposal, the originality, the link with one or more of the SDGs and the achievement of the objectives. For more information you can consult the foundations of the competition.
This school initiative is organized by LA VERDAD and sponsored by the Nursing Union of Murcia (Satse), the National Association of Photovoltaic Energy Producers (Anpier) and Repsol, as well as the collaboration of Iberdrola, Peñaplast Recycling and the Regional Assembly of Murcia.
