The writer, poet and essayist Hans Magnus Enzensberger, one of the most relevant representatives of post-war German thought, has died in Munich at the age of 93, Suhrkamp publishers announced after being informed by the deceased’s family . Born on November 11 in the town of Kaufbeuren, in the southern Bavarian region of Allgäu, Enzensberger was one of the central figures of the so-called Group 47, a group of writers and intellectuals who met periodically for two decades, between 1947 and 1947. 1967, as well as a leading reference for the student and revolutionary movement of 1968. His experiences in the extra-parliamentary opposition (Apo) were collected in his work “Tumulto”.

Enzensberger left behind an enormous literary work in which he experimented in all genres. He wrote novels, essays, poetry and dramas such as ‘The Sinking of the Titanic’ which was staged in 1980 by George Tabori. His first collection of poems appeared in 1957 under the title «Defense of the wolves». His writings include curiosities such as the 1962 essay “Einzelheiten” (Details) in which he analyzes the Neckermann catalog, a company dedicated to selling items by mail order, at a time when he was fascinated by consumer and media society.

But he also wrote books for young people such as ‘Always the books: a small economic novel’. In 1963 he was awarded the prestigious Georg Büchner Prize for Literature. Enzensberger founded the cultural magazine “Kursbuch” in 1965 and tried everything in life. He was a reader of the Suhrkamp publishing house and temporarily lived in places as diverse as socialist Cuba, Norway, Italy, Mexico and the United States. After settling in West Berlin during the Cold War, he eventually moved to the Bavarian capital.

Germany’s head of culture, green politician Claudia Roth, stressed that Enzensberger is “one of the most versatile and important German intellectuals” and recalled that he left behind a rich literary work that also includes children’s books, mathematical studies and political speeches. Hans Magnus Enzensberger was a loner among German writers and thinkers. With his verses and critical reflections, he accompanied the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, which he lived in his twenties since its foundation on the rubble of a devastated country,” said Roth.
