Christmas in July thanks to ‘Father there is only one 3’

Date:

Only Santiago Segura can turn Father’s Day into summer

We arrived in mid-July with the Virgen del Carmen parading through those seas, turning the summer cinemas into a beautiful anomaly. The heat punishes us more than the State of the Union Debate, so it’s a good idea to take shelter in the air-conditioning of the cinemas. You may find excuses for this.

Only Santiago Segura is able to turn Father’s Day into summer. He’s been doing it for several years in a row with overwhelming success, as the ‘Father There Is Only One’ saga, of which we received the third installment this week, is always one of the most successful. And that by using the white and familiar humor of their lives, so far removed from the Torrente family that they bring it closer to ‘La gran familia’ (1962) (to which they pay tribute in this film), an undoubtedly reference, those to other more cheap or wild comedies.

Besides Segura himself (who is still as bad an actor as he is an excellent producer), we find the always hilarious Toni Acosta as the long-suffering wife, and Antonio Resines, Leo Harlem, Silvia Abril, Loles León or Carlos Iglesias show why they are greats of national comedy. On this occasion, we see how the family tries to save a Christmas that is sometimes complicated. The perfect summer movie for everyone, and possibly a Christmas classic.

The next one is also Spanish, but in a very different register, a thriller with an international twist, fast-paced action and solvent production. All this is ‘Between Life and Death’, where a father, a metro driver in Belgium, watches his son commit suicide by throwing himself on the track. But he believes there is more, and he gets into trouble with the police and criminals who will reveal his past.

I know it sounds like a movie about Liam Neeson trying to save his family, but that’s exactly what it’s about, except Liam is the solvent Antonio De La Torre, a versatile actor who can be both a clown and a Hannibal Lecter. play with equal credibility. It’s arguably the best of a movie whose ambition extends the controls its ego can’t afford (‘Top Gun’ is still a good yardstick).

I give you my word that in the summary of ‘Pig’ that the producer gives us, it literally says this: “A truffle hunter living alone and isolated in a wild area of Oregon returns to Portland to find his beloved truffle sowing whom she kidnapped. Thus, he will relate to the criminal underworld of the Portland restaurants» (I imagine Chicote and Arguiñano with a machine gun). That frantic argument has only one explanation: it’s a film starring Nicolas Cage.

Vegans and animal lovers will be delighted with the herd leader’s treatment. She and a bunch of savvy critics who thought they saw among so much pigsty filth a jewel of independent cinema that will reconcile (and rehabilitate) us Cage. But for me everything remains in a meditative John Wick whose message does not reach me.

And if we continue introspection, nothing better than conforming to the stereotype and going to the quiet oriental cinema in extreme boredom. Directed by a master of Korean cinema, ‘In Front of You’ is the story of a famous and faded actress’s return to Seoul, her reunion with the world she left behind and the family she left behind. With a touch of ‘Start Again’ (1982), the film asks us to think about it, to observe that woman who doesn’t talk too much, who walks and meditates, and draws our own conclusions. Definitely won’t wipe the multiplexes.

The highlight of the week was the death of James Caan, known for his role as Sony in ‘The Godfather’ which made him famous in 1972 and became part of the myth (let’s face it, if it weren’t we wouldn’t be. talk about him here). A somewhat wasted talent for slum roles, firstly because of his typecasting and secondly because of his character. In Hollywood, they forgive you for everything unless you cost the producer money for a bad mood. ‘Misery’ (1990), ‘Stone Gardens’ (1987) and ‘Rollerball’ (1975) are his most notable works.

Have a movie week.
