This year’s competition was held at the City Theater due to the renovation of the historical complex Eras de la Sal
The 68th International Competition of Habaneras and Polyphony of Torrevieja, declared International Tourist Interest and Medal of Cultural Merit by the Generalitat Valenciana, will close its doors tomorrow with the closing gala. The last melody takes place in the Stadsschouwburg instead of at the reference location, the Eras de la Sal, never before held in a closed room. Until 1974 this happened on the Paseo de Vista Alegre – where this year there is a large screen on which the match can be followed live – and from the following year it was moved to the Eras de la Sal. a major major rehabilitation project has been undertaken, making it impossible for the time being to keep the competition there.
The Mayor of Torrevieja and President of the Municipal Council, Eduardo Dolón, confirmed his «commitment to ensure that the race returns as soon as possible to its place, the Eras de la Sal». This week there have even been meetings with the team of architects responsible for the project to make progress with the utmost zeal towards its realization. The first mayor added that, along with the change of venue, “the news of 2022 is that after two editions we are already able to restore the competition and international choral presence.” He also stressed that despite the pandemic, “Torrevieja has not stopped celebrating this competition every year with an extraordinary capacity for reinvention.”
During the opening gala last Sunday, directed for the tenth time by presenter Carolina Casado, Eduardo Dolón announced the award of the Golden Shield of the Board of Trustees. This year the prize went to the choristers from Torrevieja with a longer career: Pilar Quesada, Josefa Sala and Edmundo Boj. The three received this recognition visibly moved and surprised, but at the same time with enormous gratitude.
Among the authorities who have supported this annual event is the General Director of Tourism of the Generalitat Valenciana, Herick Campos, who underlined the prestige that the Habaneras of Torrevieja have and that goes beyond the physical place where they are held.
