The Sima de las Palomas opens its doors to display all its wealth thanks to the archaeologists working on the campaign
The Sima de las Palomas opens its doors this Sunday to display all its riches by the archaeologists working in the official excavation campaign of the Sima de las Palomas del Cabezo Gordo Field School of Prehistory and Paleoanthropology of the Quaternary of the Region of Murcia. This Open Day at Sima de las Palomas takes place on Sunday 7 am, from 9 am to 2 pm.
El Cabezo Gordo is a protected landscape of great biotic, landscape, paleontological and cultural importance. In this natural area of the municipality of Torre Pacheco is the Sima de las Palomas, considered the second most important paleontological site after Atapuerca. The Mayor of Torre Pacheco, Antonio León, accompanied by members of the Municipal Corporation and by the co-director of the Sima de las Palomas Excavations, Mariano López, and members of the MUPANTQUAT Association (Murcian Association for the Study of Paleoanthropology and Quaternary), gave released the details of this cultural visit yesterday.
Three hundred people will be able to visit the Cueva del Agua, where they will see a large mining gallery, and a natural lake where water is filtered into the mountain; They will also be able to enter the interior of the Sima de las Palomas, going back more than 50,000 years, to discover our origins and learn more about Homo Neanderthalensis; In addition, Neanderthal Experience and visit to the Interpretation Center, in the Cueva del Pie del Gigante, with the projection of videos explaining the different theories about the disappearance of Homo Neandethalensis and whether it really is extinct. A day where photography enthusiasts can participate in the photo contest ‘El Cabezo Gordo, discover it’, and spend a morning with the archaeologists in the Sima de las Palomas.
