It’s a small country. Today the state parliament of Salzburg is elected. Out of 387,000 eligible voters. That is six percent of the national electorate. In other words, only every 17th adult Austrian is allowed to vote today. And yet the elections are a signpost for federal politics.
1. The ÖVP as chancellor’s party is naturally curious to see if the trend of previous elections continues, with the incumbent’s respective party, commonly known as the governor, losing some ten percentage points of the vote. This happened with the ÖVP in Tyrol and Lower Austria and with the SPÖ in Carinthia. If government parties continue to be punished, the ÖVP in particular will not want early elections at the federal level.
