Revolutions: The Heroines of Sex Research

Date:

The often little-noticed pioneers of sexual research have done much to fundamentally change women’s sexual experiences.

They have achieved great things and yet are little known: the pioneers of sex research. For example, author Shere Hite, who shocked the world with the fact that most women cannot reach climax just through classic in-out sex. As the founder of the sexual revolution for women, she revealed the importance of clitoral stimulation for orgasm.

Or the psychologist and activist Leonore Tiefer, who never got tired of criticizing the lucrative sex solutions of the pharmaceutical industry. Thanks to her, there is now more knowledge that sexuality is diverse. Not every lack of desire or erection problem is a disease that needs to be treated with medication.

Sex-positive education for girls
Gayle Rubin, widely known as one of the founders of queer sex research, became an idol for sex-positive young women. She researched gay subcultures and criticized the idea that there is only one ‘normal’ sexuality.

Ellen Laan, considered one of the most influential sexologists, also called for sex-positive education for girls. She attributed women’s lack of desire to the fact that society does not allow them to have sexual pleasure – and fought for sexual justice.

Although the heroines of sex research are inspiring, their achievements are overlooked or denied. To this day, science is a difficult field, especially for women.
