The turbulence surrounding Wien-Energie and the rescue package requested by the federal government has now also been summoned by ÖVP Secretary General Laura Sachslehner: “The dubious events that led to this escalation urgently need to be clarified.” The federal government will help restore stability to the company, but the background to the drastic imbalance needs to be investigated.
Pamela Rendi-Wagner’s statement that, in addition to Wien-Energie, other energy companies in Austria were in trouble, she finds “brutal” that this is a pure distraction from the problems the city of Vienna now has. The cause of Wien-Energie is currently being superimposed on the presentation of the electricity price brake announced for the end of August – but that will be made up for in the coming days. This will probably result in the existing mix of cheaper basic purchases and the use of valid market prices for the remaining consumption.
Sachslehner admitted that the government had made mistakes in communicating anti-inflation measures in recent weeks – also because it needed to act quickly. “But there were weaknesses,” she admits candidly – for example, when transferring the special child benefit of 180 euros in early August, which hardly anyone recognized as such.
