The general debate at the UN General Assembly in New York has traditionally also been the venue for numerous meetings between heads of state and government. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen used the first day of his stay to talk with the presidents of two strategically important neighboring states of Russia – including “Austria’s largest oil supplier”.
This is Kazakhstan. According to Van der Bellen, he and Kazakh head of state Kassym-Schomart Tokayev “have discussed not only the options for solving the conflict in the Ukraine war, but also intensively how we can maintain security of supply”. Austria maintains a good relationship with Kazakhstan, “especially in the economic sector,” the federal president said. The Central Asian country is located on the Caspian Sea. The border with Russia is the country’s only northern border and is more than 7,600 kilometers long.
“Continuous support for Moldova”
After meeting Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Van der Bellen stated: “The Republic of Moldova can continue to count on Austria’s unbroken support and solidarity in the current challenging situation given the consequences of the war in Ukraine.”
As a neighboring country, Moldova has been hit particularly hard by the consequences of Russian aggression in Ukraine. “As a European neighbour, we will continue to do what we can to provide support. Coherence is currently more important than ever,” promises Van der Bellen.
