Euskaraz irakurri: Junqueras: “Independence orain duela hamar urte baino askoz indartsuagoa da”
“It is clear that the independence movement is much stronger now than it was ten years ago,” said Oriol Junqueras, president of the ERC, despite the situation in which the government finds itself from Pere Aragonès, after the impeachment of vice president Jordi Puigner.
Interviewed by Arantza Ruiz in the ’12 minutes’ space, Junqueras assured that “it is not the most critical moment or coincidence, we have experienced many critical moments, and much more intense than the current one. We are very used to difficult situations”.
For example, he recalled the arrests of September 20, 2017, the prison or exile of Catalan politicians, which are “more critical moments”. In addition, “the history of the Catalan independence movement, and in particular of the ERC, which has been the victim of the most reprisals in Catalonia’s history, has seen vastly more critical moments,” he added.
“There are problems in coalition governments everywhere, they are in the Spanish state, and certainly also in Euskadi, or there have been,” he said.
Unilaterality and Multilaterality
On the other hand, the ERC president explained that “any political process, and no doubt the independence of Catalonia, is the creation of a new state within the framework of the European Union, is always a complex political process, which requires unilateralism as well as multilateralism”
In the words of Junqueras, “it requires unilateralism in our democratic will to build large majorities and it requires multilateralism in international recognition. This is what we have always defended and what we have defended at the moment.”

Regarding the current negotiating table between the government of Catalonia and the Spanish government, he recalled that “the results achieved at the table do not depend only on our will”.
“It also depends to a great extent on the will of the Spanish Government, and it is clear that the Spanish Government is running at its best, wishing that this table did not exist and could save it; but we managed to to get it to a negotiating table between Catalonia and Spain is without a doubt already a great achievement,” he claimed.
For this reason, he has called for unity: “We are convinced that if the independence movement as a whole joined us at this negotiating table, we would be a little stronger, and the Spanish government would have a little more difficulty in democratic terms to say no. “.
Jail
Finally, regarding his time in prison, “prisoning all of us is part of the road to collective freedom for our people,” he declared. “The fact that we have spent time in prison allows us to open many doors in the international community much more effectively, which were previously a little more difficult to open,” he concluded.
