Defense Secretary Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) has ordered stricter procedures for disciplinary misconduct in the military. She responds to an incident of Nazi reactivation and an incident of sexual harassment.
Notably, a Carinthian NCO and a Tyrolean NCO who had sexually assaulted a soldier were not fired, despite being reactivated by the Nazis. Only the molested soldier left the army.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) then announced that such incidents will be subject to maximum disciplinary sanctions in the future. “All bodies and authorities in the disciplinary system must make full use of the legally permitted range of penalties in corresponding military and civilian disciplinary proceedings,” Tanner ordered in a statement. All responsible persons should take appropriate measures to ensure that disciplinary and criminally relevant incidents are prosecuted. Tanner cited sexual harassment and politically and religiously motivated extremism as examples.
Tanner: “Shouldn’t stand by idly by”
A concrete measure is, for example, an increased reporting obligation for the head of the disciplinary court. “We should not stand idly by in cases such as those that have come to light here, because I see zero tolerance here,” concluded the defense minister.
