Restore defensive military structures built during the Francoism in the Navarrese Pyrenees through the forced labor of republican prisoners and to reveal their value as memory elements. That is the main goal of the ‘Concrete Borders’ project, promoted by the Government of Navarra and the Government of Spain.

In an act that took place in Madrid today, the Navarrese Minister of Civil Relations, Ana Olloand the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martinezhave signed the agreement of collaboration to launch the initiative and both took the opportunity for the importance of memory and “its fundamental role in building a fairer and more democratic society”.

The main thrust of ‘Concrete Borders’ work includes rediscovering bunkers and defences, memory retrieval – locating and recording testimony and research in municipal archives – and making a documentary. In this sense, Ollo has underlined the role these places play in the intergenerational transfer. “Because memory is above all a matter of the future and an indispensable tool to promote values of respect, tolerance and freedom. For this reason, these places are fundamental when it comes to promoting and conveying concepts of peace and coexistence, from the memory of what happened,” he explained.

The Ministry of the Presidency, with a maximum contribution of EUR 200,000, will undertake the design and production of this project, as well as the preparation of a didactic unit related to forced labor and concrete structures in the Pyrenees, and the cleaning and modification of bunkers and their entrances. For its part, the Navarro Institute of Memory will be responsible for the purchase of indicative panels and beacons, the printing of brochures with routes and the inclusion of routes on the website espaciodememoria.com, as well as the organization of youth volunteer camps and memory schools, with a maximum contribution of € 199,000 .

The signing has also served the Navarrese minister to propose the creation of a project around Fort San Cristóbal, in accordance with the recently passed Democratic Memory Law. Likewise, they have addressed other issues considered in this ordinance, such as the removal of Francoist symbols and the census of places of remembrance.
