Candidate Lauren Kerr aims to become East Belfast’s first gay man

UUP candidate in East Belfast Lauren Kerry

The UUP candidate hopes to be the first lesbian MLA in East Belfast.

Lauren Kerry was involved in politics for 15 years and began working in the party’s press service during the 2011 elections.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that his political views were based on most of his experience.

He told Belfast Live: “When I think about the experience I had as a teenager and young adult, I want to do everything I can to make sure that other gay guys don’t have the same experience.”

Lauren believes that the LGBT community in Northern Ireland faces many issues that need to be addressed urgently.

He said, “I think the first of those, of course, is transit health care. I think the system that is currently in place is irrelevant and doesn’t serve people and I think it makes people’s lives more difficult.”

“Something I’m very excited about is sex education and relationships and the fact that we don’t have global sex and relationships in Northern Ireland.”

The 30-year-old remembers that as a child she often wondered why she didn’t have the same experience as her other friends.

If sex and relationship education were available in schools, she said, “we wouldn’t have generations of children who weren’t seen in the school experience, they wouldn’t exist.” [It’s important for LGBT+ kids] “They know they are in the minds of their peers and they can teach the class what a healthy relationship is.”

For Lauren, the upcoming election is “an opportunity this year with a new assembly … to see a broader range of votes that accurately reflect the new Northern Ireland.”

She said, “The thing that shapes my life experience and shapes the way others see me is that I’m a woman. And I think as a woman in the association… it’s important that you come and support yourself and other women.”

As you know, it will be in reproductive rights, changes in the judiciary, education and employment opportunities.

Lauren says she firmly believes in the importance of building good relationships with others in government.

“I’m a pragmatist and I think we don’t have a lot of politics in Northern Ireland, just because a good idea comes from another party or politician doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea.”

He continued: “I think we in Northern Ireland just need more people in the House of Representatives who are willing to work together for the betterment of Northern Ireland.”

In many ways, Lauren is the typical millennial. He is open on his social media platforms and has starred in stand-up comedy for several years. He said he loves being honest online “so people know what they’re getting, you know, and they can decide whether to vote or not.”

According to Lauren, “We lacked public stoning of people in politics here.

“[I’m] Trying to be the person I saw when I was 14, might feel a little weird. Well, if you can achieve something, if you can achieve it, you know, whatever happens after the 5th of May, it was worth it. “
