“The Greens should take off their ideological blinkers when it comes to migration,” says Vienna’s ÖVP municipal councilor Laura Sachslehner in conversation on krone.tv with Jana Pasching. The People’s Party, like all other parties, must work on the necessary measures and solutions, and they do. The ones failing here are clearly the European Union. Sachslehner finds the debate that has taken place in recent weeks following the conversations with ORF2 editor-in-chief Matthias Schrom and ex-FPÖ boss Heinz-Christian Strache hypocritical. “I don’t believe in constantly philosophizing about private chats being made public. Everyone should be able to judge for themselves how individual media professionals or editors in this country treat politicians.”
In the words of his boss, the Austrian public broadcaster is facing “one of the biggest financial crises in its history”. The ORF household tax model, as it could come in 2024, would add an additional burden to inflation for many, says Sachslehner. „I think it is important that the ORF implements reforms and adopts a new model instead of asking politicians for more money again and again and thereby also burdening the taxpayer phase to see how you reposition yourself and make the necessary adjustments. “That’s why I expect the same from the ORF.” There are some reforms that have been discussed over and over in the past, rather than constantly asking for more money here.
Sachslehner cannot explain that people currently have less confidence in the ÖVP than in the SPÖ when it comes to asylum: No one is as reliable as the SPÖ when it comes to asylum. It was only during the summer talks that Pamela Rendi-Wagner said there was no asylum crisis. “I can’t recall a single proposal from the Social Democrats that would have helped solve the asylum problem.”
A switch to the FPÖ is not an option for Sachslehner, despite an offer from Dominik Nepp. “The People’s Party is and will remain my political home.” She really enjoys working in Vienna. “Just because certain issues are of particular concern to me doesn’t mean I would switch to the FPÖ,” Sachslehner said.
