New strategy – Supply: Government stimulates circular economy

Date:

Austria has set itself the goal of being climate neutral by 2040. In addition to the energy and mobility transition, the turquoise-green cabinet presented a third package on Wednesday to achieve this goal: the circular economy strategy.

According to Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens), the war in Ukraine has shown a second important aspect of the circular economy in addition to climate protection, namely security of supply. More durable, recycled or remanufactured products that are returned to the loop “make our economy more resilient,” Gewessler stressed.

Conservation of resources and wise use
In addition to repairs, “resource-intensive construction residues” must be reused, but the wise use of waste is also mentioned in the strategy, which was developed in collaboration with numerous experts from different fields. According to the information, about 600 measures in the key areas of consumption, construction, waste management, mobility, packaging, biomass, textiles and plastics could be listed. The focus is on resource conservation and the wise use of raw materials.

Totschnig: Food security in Austria assured
With regard to Austria’s food supply, Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig calmed down in the joint press conference with Gewessler after the Council of Ministers: “The food supply situation in Austria is currently safe! We owe this to our farmers, food processing and retail companies, but also to functioning value chains.” The situation in the global food trade is tense due to disrupted supply chains and scarce transport capacity. “Nevertheless, food production and food trade in Austria and Europe are currently proceeding without major disruptions,” the ÖVP minister stressed.

Incidentally, Totschnig wants to provide information about the current supply situation with food once a quarter in the future. “This is how we create trust and security,” explains the Minister of Agriculture.
