Doskozil as point of contention – ex-ORF boss: “…then I will resign from the SPÖ”

Date:

Former ORF general director Gerhard Zeiler has uttered sharp words towards the mayor of Burgenland, Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ). “There are few scenarios where I can imagine not being a member of the SPÖ anymore, but a chancellor candidate or a party leadership by Doskozil would be such a case,” the media manager stressed in an interview on Puls24 (see video above).

When asked by moderator Corinna Milborn how he justified this, Zeiler said: “Because I don’t think he (Hans Peter Doskozil) is a social democrat. Because I think he moves way too much for many reasons, including politically and in terms of views, where the FPÖ is more at home. And I wouldn’t participate in that.”

Red counterattack from Burgenland
The reaction from Burgenland was not long in coming. “Mr Zeiler has one from the SPÖ in 2019
supported minority government of the former ÖVPChancellor Kurz suggested. Any questions?” SPÖ country manager Roland Fürst wrote on Twitter.

Zeiler once intended to replace Faymann with Kern
Zeiler is not a blank slate when it comes to causing a stir within the SPÖ. In mid-May 2016, the media manager in ORF’s “ZiB 2” openly admitted that he and Christian Kern had spent a year preparing the replacement of Werner Faymann as chancellor and SPÖ federal party leader. “We both had a role to play and agreed that a personnel change within the SPÖ was necessary,” Zeiler said at the time.

SPÖ survey: Doskozil puts the rod in the window for the party leader
An internal power struggle has been raging within the SPÖ for some time – this time between the Red Party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner and Doskozil. The latest excitement was a survey by the SPÖ Burgenland. It called into question Doskozil’s federal political potential. The result: with a chancellor candidate Doskozil, the SPÖ would reach 32 percent nationally and under Rendi-Wagner 27 percent.

Ludwig criticizes Doskozil
The mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, was angry about the action. And he was convinced: none other than Rendi-Wagner will be the top candidate in the next elections. “The issue of the top candidate will be clarified in the SPÖ elections within the relevant party committees,” Carinthian governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) said. That is currently not the case.

Doskozil puzzled by “hatred”.
Doskozil, in turn, defended the investigation, stressing that he was surprised by the “hatred” within the SPÖ that was now being inflicted on him. The fact that he would actually run for chancellor was “utopian because I clearly polarize too much in the party,” Doskozil said. Rendi-Wagner himself described the differences with Doskosil as “not tragic”.

ÖVP: “You don’t really know who is pulling the strings in the SPÖ”
The ÖVP is happy to accept the differences within the SPÖ. “Ludwig has to get involved in the leadership debate in the SPÖ and ensure stability. Lately it has not really been clear who is actually in charge in the SPÖ. Is it Rendi Wagner? Keizer? doskozil? Or is it Ludwig? The more time passes, the clearer it becomes that the SPÖ cannot find a clear line on asylum issues,” Secretary-General Bernhard Stocker wrote in a broadcast.
