The civic network Sare has ended the removal policy after 34 years and is urging the start of one new stage focused on the “way back home” using only general penitentiary law itself. While there are still about a dozen inmates in Spanish prisons, Sare expects the removal to end this year, in the next few weeks or two months. In any case, he pointed out that the exceptional situation still persists and gave as an example the withdrawn third degrees and the exceptional laws 7/2003, 5/2003 and 7/2014.

On the eve of Saturday’s demonstration in Bilbao in defense of the rights of Basque prisoners, Radio Euskadi’s “Boulevard” program has Sare spokesperson, Joseba Azkarraga.

The representative of the citizens’ network believes that the end of the dispersion and of the penitentiary policy has become possible thanks to the political majorities in the parliaments of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Pamplona, the trade union unity and the citizen mobilization. He added that social mobilization is an important part of the consequence of these goals and should be an important part of this new phase. “Governments don’t move, they have to be moved,” he insisted.

For all these reasons, it has declined participation in the Saturday demonstration which starts at 5 p.m. on Autonomía Street in Bilbao.
