Higher authorities on the train – Cause of false statement: WKStA report too short

Date:

The Public Prosecutor’s Office for Economic and Corruption (WKStA) has completed its investigation into the allegations of false statements against ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) in the Ibiza U Commission and has submitted a project report to the higher authorities. A spokesperson confirmed this on Friday. The WKStA has said nothing about the contents of the report. It is unclear if charges will be filed.

Kurz’s lawyer, Werner Suppan, could have expected this and sent the APA a precautionary statement.

Kurz’s lawyer believes the allegations are false
So far, 30 witnesses have acquitted Kurz with their statements, it said. There is a frantic effort to misinterpret his statements, “through discussions of whether a ‘After’ to a ‘Never’ should be interpreted as a double negative, contradiction, or approval, or whether the word ‘involved’ should have been more appropriate than ‘informed.’ Like many allegations made by the WKStA, this one too will turn out to be false.”

The project report only deals with the allegations of false statements, the WKStA explains. It is now up to the public prosecutor’s office, which then reports to the Ministry of Justice or the advisory board. The rest of the investigations into the Casag case following the Ibiza video are ongoing.

ÖBAG: How intensively was Kurz involved in the reform?
The heart of the matter is the question of how intensively the former ÖVP boss under turquoise blue was involved in the reform of the state holding company ÖBIB into ÖBAG. During his investigation in the Ibiza U committee in June 2020, Kurz famously downplayed his role in the selection of the supervisory board and in the appointment of the controversial ex-ÖBAG boss Thomas Schmid – and therefore spoke of normal processes . However, the WKStA saw possible false statements given the chat history.

There are also project reports on Kurz’s former chief of staff Bernhard Bonelli and former Casinos general manager and ex-ÖVP deputy chief Bettina Glatz-Kremsner, Ö1 reported. Investigations against outgoing ÖBB CFO Arnold Schiefer have recently been halted.
