From 2018 to March 2023, Martin Eichtinger (ÖVP) worked as a State Councilor in the Lower Austrian state government under Mikl-Leitner. Now he is embarking on a new career path.
The former provincial councilor of Lower Austria has been the special representative and coordinator for the neighborhood policy and the foreign policy dimension of the Danube region in the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA) since Friday. “As one of the country’s most experienced diplomats, he knows the neighborhood and the Danube region, which is particularly important to us, very well and now puts his international network and experience of recent years at the service of networking with our European neighbours,” said one broadcast.
Professional background
Eichtinger obtained his PhD in Graz and completed postgraduate studies at the Bologna Center of Johns Hopkins University in the USA. In 1986 he started as an adviser in the political department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, followed by a position at the Austrian embassy in Mexico. He was then personal secretary to Foreign Minister Alois Mock. From 1992 to 1999 he headed the Austrian Press and Information Service in Washington before working for the Federation of Industrialists and later for Neusiedler AG in Russia.
From 2003 to 2007 he was chief of staff of Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Bartenstein and then Secretary General of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2006/2007. From 2007 to 2010 he was the Austrian ambassador to Romania and Moldova, from 2010 to 2015 head of the Department of Cultural Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He acted as Austrian ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from January 2015.
Following this activity, Eichtinger was a member of the state government of Lower Austria from 2018 to March 2023 and was responsible for the labor market, housing and international relations.
