Karl Nehammer visited Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Compared to Frederiksen, even FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl comes across as a tolerant leftist when it comes to migration issues. It has the strictest asylum rules in the EU.
Nowhere else in the EU do such strict immigration and asylum laws apply. For example, since 2017 there has been a “ghetto law” in Denmark, which allows resettlement even if the migrant quota in the residential area is too high.
Denmark does not have to comply with EU directives
Chancellor Karl Nehammer wants to get ideas for the implementation of his new goal from the Danes: in his future speech, he announced that only those who have been in the country for five years should receive full aid. Such a model already exists in Denmark. Anyone who has lived legally in Denmark for nine consecutive years has the right to do so. However, Denmark does not have to comply with EU directives due to an opt-out arrangement.
The Austrian variant: Insurance benefits such as unemployment benefits or family benefits may not be affected. Within the coalition with the Greens, Nehammer wants to at least “discuss” the project, he said. “The EU asylum system is broken,” was one of Frederiksen’s first statements.
Asylum centers in third countries could be targeted
Despite the fact that Frederiksen is a Social Democrat and Nehammer is from the ÖVP, the two agree on asylum issues. “The restructuring of the social system in Denmark has made it no longer an attractive country for immigration. That is a role model.” Asylum centers in third countries could be a joint initiative. “Denmark could now set up asylum centres. You can show the EU the way. Then we would have to change the laws in the EU,” said Nehammer.
