In the future, 350 bicycle police officers throughout Austria will battle “traffic offenders”, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced on Monday. There are currently 310 officers patrolling with bicycles, e-bikes and speed pedelecs.
In Vienna, 175 police officers are already patrolling by bicycle, 161 of which depend on need and official possibilities. 14 police officers are alone on bicycles in the federal capital – and their companions are also equipped with flashing lights and a siren.
The Viennese police fleet currently includes 88 bicycles and 18 e-bikes. A new blue light system is being purchased, generating more attention on the road, and three different models are in the testing phase.
“Keystone of road safety”
There has been a bicycle police in Vienna since 2007, since 2021 as a separate department within the state transport service. For Karner, this is a “successful model” and a “cornerstone of road safety”, as he stressed. There is now an executive service on wheels in every federal state, which the Minister of the Interior would like to expand further.
