The tone in the turquoise-green federal government is getting rougher. In judicial projects there are now even signs of a total blockade. The mirror ministers Alma Zadić (Greens) and Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) are stubborn.
The government is in a downward spiral. Now the conflict over upcoming court projects has escalated. “Minister Alma Zadić wants to distract from the stagnation and undesirable developments at the Ministry of Justice”, this quote does not come from an opposition party, but from the coalition partner of the Green Minister of Justice.
Minister of Justice attacks coalition partners head-on
This had previously attacked the ÖVP and its turquoise counterpart, constitutional minister Karoline Edtstadler, head-on in the ORF “Press Hour”: “The rights of the accused have now been discovered where individual ÖVP politicians are accused.”
Edtstadler advocates a ban on citing media from files
In exchange for the establishment of an independent federal prosecutor, Edtstadler demands that the rights of the defendants be strengthened and that cell phones be seized and evaluated. She recently emphasized this in an interview with “Krone”. In addition, she is now also demanding a ban on citing media from files. This should apply before public hearings in criminal proceedings.
These demands are a red flag for the Greens. Zadić did not rule out that the planned reforms would not come about at all. The ÖVP does not accept negotiating dates and has made a proposal that is not acceptable to the Greens. “There will be no clear solutions with me,” said Zadić.
Attorney General threatens to fail because of the dispute
In substance, the ÖVP wants to see a parliamentary responsible public prosecutor at the top of the chain of command, while the Greens want a three-member senate.
A rift arose between ministers in the fall of 2022 when Zadić came out with a proposal that had not been agreed with Edtstadler.
