Powder keg Kosovo – Sobotka: Europe without Western Balkans “incomplete”

Date:

President Sobotka of the National Council spoke with the Serbian head of state on the last day of his trip to the Western Balkans. He remains unyielding on the Kosovo issue.

Europe’s investments in the Balkans have paid off, but more efforts are needed to reach ‘people’s hearts’. This was the conclusion reached by the President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP), at the end of his three-day trip, which took him to Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia.

In Belgrade he was received by President Aleksandar Vučić, who subsequently reaffirmed his position on the conflict with Kosovo. Serbia and the Kosovo Serbs want extensive autonomy for the Serb communities in the north of the country. The Kosovo government firmly rejects this.

However, Vučić thanked Austria for supporting Serbia on its way to EU membership. Austria is an important partner, confirmed Sobotka’s colleague Vladimir Orlić.

Sobotka: “Europe is not complete without the Western Balkans”
Austria cooperates with all three countries at the parliamentary level. Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia are very grateful for that, says Sobotka. The mood in politics has become much more pro-European in recent years. But more work is needed to convince the population. “Europe is not complete without the Western Balkans, only together can we stand against China and the US,” Sobotka said.
