In Austria there is still no deportation to Syria. The Ministry of the Interior justifies the lack of human rights standards and emphasizes that it is working closely with other EU member states in this area. Syrians currently top the asylum statistics.
Between January and March 2023, they submitted 2,572 applications, in long-term statistics (since 2015) they rank first, ahead of people from Afghanistan and India. The clear majority of their asylum applications (62 percent) are also decided positively. About a fifth (21 percent) have a negative or ‘other’ decision. Since the beginning of this year, 904 asylum applications from Syrians have been rejected. However, they are currently not being deported to their country of origin. “Repatriations from Austria to Syria are currently not possible due to the human rights situation,” the Interior Ministry said.
However, people are deported to other EU countries on the basis of the Dublin procedure. This stipulates that the EU state where the person concerned first entered the Union is responsible for the asylum procedure. Austria also continues to promote voluntary return “through organizational support and first aid.” That won’t change any time soon. A new assessment by the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (BFA) requires a “significant, permanent change in the situation in Syria”.
pressure in Turkey
“The aim is to provide a solid basis for decisions and to ensure that the deportation of Syrian nationals is carried out in accordance with applicable human rights standards,” a ministry spokesman said. More than twelve years after the outbreak of the civil war, Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad is back in power. The country has recently been readmitted to the Arab League. Lebanon has resumed deportations to Syria. In Turkey there is strong social pressure to do this. The country has taken in three million refugees.
Countries such as Germany are currently not planning deportations. From Austria it is said that the current situation and jurisprudence would be taken into account. This means that changes “can always be taken into account on a case-by-case basis in each case of the procedure”.
