The pandemic is over and domestic politics are already making bigger leaps while on vacation, two members of the government even making a few cross the pond. However, most top politicians remain faithful to the trend towards summer vacations at home. SPÖ boss Andreas Babler hardly has time for vacation: he wants to tour Austria to raise his awareness.
Several ÖVP politicians dare to take a look across the national borders again in the summer, after walking in Austria has been the trend in recent years because of Corona. Minister of Labor Martin Kocher tours Canada and Secretary of State Florian Tursky from Digital climbs through the national parks of the US state of Colorado with his partner. Chancellor Karl Nehammer is satisfied with a family holiday in Greece – he canceled it last year.
Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) does not yet know exactly where he is going, but he is sure that he will be on his way by train, probably towards northern Italy and southern France.
Many are drawn south
France is once again the holiday country of Chancellor Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP). Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) is going to sea in Europe with his family – the family council must first decide where to go. President of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka is pulling his caravan towards southern Italy with his wife and youngest child – hopefully without a burst tire this time. State Secretary for Tourism Susanne Kraus-Winkler (ÖVP) has chosen Tuscany as a holiday destination in addition to South Styria.
Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) does not stress himself with travel. He comes to rest in his homeland Vorarlberg. Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) also stays at home. His vacation weeks take him to Graz. Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) relaxed in the country. In Carinthia, a few days at the lake combined with hikes are on the program. Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) are also planning holidays in Austria.
It is a well-known fact that the Federal President likes to be in nature. Alexander Van der Bellen drives home to the Kaunertal and also spends a few vacation days at the Attersee.
Baber on tour in Austria
SPÖ boss Babler is undertaking a completely different tour in the summer. As the new chairman, he wants to make himself known to the rank and file and travel throughout the country. His office has already received more than 300 appointment requests. A week’s holiday with the family should be in the middle of it, destination still unknown. FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl wants to recharge the batteries with his family at home in Lower Austria and perhaps also in his home country of Carinthia. One or the other climbing tour in the Alps is planned. NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger will spend the summer holidays with her family in Ausseerland and use the time to relax.
State Secretary for Youth Affairs Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) has a classic approach. After the start at the “Woodstock der Blasmusik”, three generations of Plakolms go on holiday in Salzburg for a week.
