A military base in Libya used by mercenaries from the Russian group Wagner was attacked with drones on Friday night. It is not known who attacked the base in the east of the North African country.
There were no casualties at the base, where “members of the Wagner group are located,” a military official told AFP news agency.
Libya has been the scene of instability and clashes between armed militias since the ousting of Muammar al-Gaddafi in 2011. The UN-recognized interim government in the western capital Tripoli is fighting for power with a counter-government in the east, backed by the local parliament and powerful general Khalifa Haftar.
Mercenaries active in several African countries
The Russian group Wagner supports Haftar and has been involved in his failed attempt to take the capital in the past. The mercenary army is also active in other African countries such as Mali. She is accused of torturing and killing civilians in several African countries.
Uncertain future of the Wagner group
After tensions between the Kremlin and the Wagner group, which is also stationed with hundreds of mercenaries in different regions of Syria, the military in Syria faces an uncertain future.
