Early elections? – Turquoise-green: No coalition guarantee from Maurer

Date:

Green club leader Sigrid Maurer wants to give ‘no guarantees’ that the turquoise-green coalition will continue to exist at the federal level until the regular election date in the fall of 2024. “There are no guarantees for anything in life, especially in politics,” Maurer emphasized. At the same time, she wants to stick to the common goals of the Greens and the ÖVP and has rejected early elections.

There would still be many challenges and a lot of government work waiting for the coalition with the ÖVP, Maurer said on Friday on the sidelines of the green series of talks “Let’s sit together” in the Tyrolean Imst. Top Green politicians discussed this with about thirty sympathizers. Including sitting circle.

‘There is no majority for new elections among the population’
Maurer believes it is right to close the legislature regularly. “There is no majority among the population for new elections,” Maurer said, rejecting what has almost become a “new election tradition” in Austria. “It is no secret that the ÖVP and the Greens are very different parties,” Maurer explains. Yet they work together professionally and would also carry out many projects – such as the recent rent cap.

Maurer optimistic about the climate protection law
Before the elections, they also want to put forward other projects that have not yet been implemented, including the Climate Protection Act. Here too, Maurer remained optimistic. So far, projects have also been decided in the turquoise-green collaboration that has been shaky for a long time – keyword climate ticket, but most recently also the mentioned rental price ceiling. When it comes to expanding childcare, the ÖVP has recently come to an issue that is very central to the Greens.

It was clear to Maurer that Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler would also lead the Greens into the next elections. “Of course” Kogler will be the top candidate, Maurer said. He led the party from the bottom to the government and is doing a good job there.

Maurer doesn’t expect a quick comeback
Maurer did not expect Sebastian Kurz to return as the ÖVP’s top candidate for the upcoming National Council elections. “Our counterpart is Karl Nehammer and I believe it will remain that way,” said Maurer. We are working well with the ÖVP under the current line-up with Chancellor Karl Nehammer and club president August Wöginger. “Sebastian Kurz is awaiting trial and is clearly trying to do litigious PR with a film,” Maurer said. Ultimately, this will ‘not help him’ in the eyes of the independent judiciary, in which it has a lot of confidence.
