Last summer, 42 people followed the call of Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) at the Frequency Festival and Electric Love and got tattooed – in the hope of winning a climate ticket. The tattoo artist would have made a lot of money. He is said to have received almost 19,000 euros for the modest lettering.
It was one of the big domestic political stirs of the summer: Anyone who had a climate ticket motif engraved at a festival could win a public transport ticket for a year. 33 motifs have been specially designed for this purpose. The Green Minister personally visited the Frequency wearing a “fake peckerl”.
In total, the campaign, which was only very well received, would have cost 22,999.30 euros, as can be seen on the National Council’s homepage.
The tattoo artist apparently made a lot of profit from it and earned a total of 18,882 euros – that’s 547 euros per tattoo for just 42 pieces. The rest went to the Jung von Matt agency, which is responsible for almost all of the Greens’ advertising campaigns. There are currently no plans to repeat the polarizing offering.
40 percent of people under the age of 35 have a tattoo
Gewessler justified the campaign with the title ‘The campaign gets under your skin’ by saying that they mainly wanted to appeal to young adults when it came to the topic of mobility transition. More than 40 percent of people under the age of 35 in Austria have at least one tattoo. National Councilor Julia Herr (SPÖ) spoke of a “crazy idea” where young people literally have to wear their skin to the market to save 1,000 euros.
