The three parties signed a joint statement declaring their no to the monarchy and the constitution, a text “that neither recognizes nor respects the present and future desires of the social majorities of our nations.”
Simultaneously with the swearing-in of the Constitution by Princess Leonor, Republican Left (ERC), EH Bildu and the Galician nationalist bloc (BNG) expressed their no to the Spanish Constitution and the Spanish monarchy this Tuesday.
In a joint statement titled “Neither monarchy nor constitution. Democracy. Freedom. Republics”have indicated that they will not participate in the “legitimation of the Royal House and its privileges, nor in the legitimation of the Spanish Constitution itself, which does not recognize or respect the current and future desires of the social majorities of our nations.”
According to him, the Spanish monarchy and its members are ‘one of the greatest exponents of the Spanish monarchy denial of civil, political and national rights who help our people and their citizens.” They also identify the Crown with “the maximum expression of inequality, privilege and impunity compared to the rest of the citizens.”
On the other hand, they have emphasized that neither the king nor his heirs “have the legitimacy of Catalonia, Euskadi and Galicia” that they therefore do not recognize “any political or institutional function”.
They also declared the monarchy represents the “elites”, “privileges”, “impunity”, “greed” and “imposition”values that contradict ‘the majoritarian sentiment of our societies and the social majorities of the state’.
Finally, they pointed out that the republican values of equality, justice, freedom and democracy “arise only from breaking with the monarchical legacy and regime that results from it.” “A true democracy will only be viable if the national and social rights, freedoms and democratic will of all peoples and nations of the State are respected and recognized,” they concluded.
For her part, the leader of Can and Acting Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, said on Tuesday that Princess Leonor’s swearing-in of the constitution aims to perpetuate the monarchy by sending the message that she will become queen, and has shown her rejection of the constitution: “let’s go to work so that that never happens.”
