If, as announced, Ukraine stops sending Russian gas to the West from 2025, OMV could also fully supply its customers with gas from other sources. “We have contractually secured non-Russian gas quantities – partly from our own production, partly from contracts with third parties,” OMV boss Alfred Stern said on Tuesday.
“And we have now booked the pipeline capacities until 2028 to bring this to Austria,” Stern told the APA. Gas supplies from Russia are unreliable and entail significantly more risk than in the past, explains OMV’s CEO.
Other suppliers and transport routes
That is why they looked and found other suppliers and transport routes. The pipeline capacities booked by OMV are gas pipelines from the West, not Ukrainian capacities, Stern said. “We can always fully supply our customers with non-Russian gas quantities if necessary.”
In this way, OMV has made its contribution to security of supply. “We are the largest market player in Austria – albeit with a market share of 30 percent. We have now ensured that we can supply this 30 percent at any time, even if the pipeline capacities fail.”
The domestic gas storage facilities are almost full
OMV gas storage facilities are nearly full, and the shipload of LNG (cold liquefied natural gas) from Abu Dhabi announced last year “will arrive in December,” Stern said. A five-year supply contract for twelve terawatt hours (TWh) of gas per year was concluded with the Norwegian state energy giant Equinor. Austria’s annual consumption is approximately 90 TWh.
