Carries a gun – man took hostages in post office in Japan

Date:

Two incidents in Japan within a very short period of time and close to each other have kept the Japanese police on their toes. The first shots were fired in the city of Toda, two people were injured. The man, armed with a gun, then took hostages at a post office in the town of Warabi.

The city authorities explained that the hostage taker would have barricaded himself in the building with several victims. As the Reuters agency reported, at least two women are said to be in the man’s power. The suspect is said to be between 40 and 50 years old.

The suspect had earlier fired shots at a hospital in the neighboring town of Toda, wounding two people. The shooter was then able to flee the scene.

The television images showed a man wearing a tracksuit and a white shirt standing just in front of the post office and holding some kind of gun in his hand. Several police officers wearing bulletproof vests were stationed nearby. The public was asked to avoid the area surrounding the post office.

Such crimes are rare in Japan. Last year there were only nine gun incidents, six of which were gang-related. These acts killed four people, one of whom was former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated during a campaign rally in July 2022.
