What the “Krone” already knew in advance is now official: Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen will announce his inauguration for this year’s federal presidential elections on Sunday afternoon. The head of state is aiming for a second term in office.
While the president’s PR advisers were in suspense until the very end, the information condensed on Sunday. The announcement was supposedly teased with a video on the TikTok platform. However, it has not been officially confirmed that the account “The Candidate” can actually be assigned to Van der Bellen.
Also over the weekend, political observers largely agreed that Van der Bellen would announce his return on Sunday.
Van der Bellen continues tradition
When Alexander Van der Bellen is a candidate for the second time, he continues the tradition: according to the constitution, federal presidents can run for a second term after the first six years. Almost everyone has benefited from this.
Only one of the eight directly elected heads of state resigned: Kurt Waldheim in 1992, after discussions about his Nazi past caused major schisms in 1986. Theodor Körner died in the first period.
Opponent or broad support?
In any case, a decision to resume would have far-reaching consequences. The ÖVP and SPÖ have already indicated that they will not put forward their own candidates if Van der Bellen puts himself forward for a second term.
The Greens, from whose stable Van der Bellen, who triumphed in an epic vote in 2016, is said to support the incumbent anyway. Only the liberals absolutely want to set up a competitor.
